Day 1 | Data Modelling in Azure Cosmos DB | Will Velida | Development | Modelling your data correctly is vital when building efficient applications that use Azure Cosmos DB. Proper data modelling allows us to easily scale our Cosmos DB resources as our applications grow. Many developers fall into the trap of thinking that just because Azure Cosmos DB is a NoSQL service, we don’t need to spend time modelling our data. Lack of attention to proper data modelling in Azure Cosmos DB can lead to poor performing apps that can’t scale and are expensive to run. In this session, we will cover: – Why you should model your data correctly for NoSQL databases and how this is different to relational data modelling. – When you would reference entities in NoSQL vs embedding entities in your documents. – How partitioning and collections factor in when modelling our data and how we can design our collections accordingly. By the end of this session, attendees will be empowered with data modelling techniques that they can use to build highly scalable and successfully applications that use Azure Cosmos DB. | 13-09-21 5:30 | 13-09-21 6:45 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

Day 1 | Zero downtime database deployments | Alex Yates | Development | You understand that big bang deployments are painful, but each deploy may disrupt users, so you are restricted to tight deployment windows for your database. The consequences of missing your windows aren’t worth thinking about – but it gets more difficult each time. In order to move to smaller, more frequent and more reliable deployments you need to demonstrate that you can safely deploy during business hours – without disrupting users. In this session we’ll discuss the most popular strategies: Blue/Green and Canary deploys, Cluster Immune Systems and Feature Toggles. Then we’ll discuss the fundamental changes that we need to make to the way we think about database “deployments” and “releases” in order to support these strategies. We will finish with a SQL Server demo that uses a feature flag and the expand/contract model to support backward compatibility and safe, fast rollback options. | 13-09-21 7:00 | 13-09-21 8:15 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

Day 1 | All You Wanted to Know About Collations | Erland Sommarskog | Development | Collations is a topic that tends to confuse SQL Server professionals. It is not that the implementation of collations in SQL Server is extremely confusing, but computer people are not always well versed in human languages and character encodings, and therefore it can be a big surprise that V and W could be considered equal or that i and I could be different in a case-insensitive comparison. In this light-minded presentation I cover what a collation controls and I explain what all the funny components in a collation name like Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_KS_WS_SC_UTF8 actually mean. I illustrate this by giving examples of how they work with different languages. I provide some tricks you can apply to overcome some traps related to collations. I give particular attention to the UTF-8 collations added in SQL 2019. Finally, I discuss how the choice of collations can affect performance. | 13-09-21 10:00 | 13-09-21 12:00 | Kilimanjaro | View In Your Timezone |

Day 1 | Power BI scenarios for automated monitoring | Andrea Martorana Tusa | Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics | Power BI grows at an exponential rate and so probably does your environment. Many new users every day, workspaces, data sources etc. How to deal with it? For a Power BI tenant’s administrator it’s a challenging task keeping everything under control, documenting the model, tracking changes, cleaning it up, knowing which dataset is used and which one isn’t. What is needed is automation. Monitor workloads, track changes, read and download logs, set alerts, handle contents and artifacts. How to achieve this goal? Through the use of the three automation pillars: Powershell, Microsoft Flow, Power BI APIs. Many examples will be illustrated during the session, based on a customer implementation where the Power BI admin plays a central role for governance and management of the solution. | 13-09-21 11:30 | 13-09-21 12:45 | Sphinx | View In Your Timezone |
Day 1 | Test Driven Database Development | Magnus Ahlkvist | Development | est Driven Development, or TDD, means we start with unit tests, even before writing our code. When done properly, TDD leads to higher quality systems. It gives us good test coverage, it’s automated and it gives us good regression testing. To isolate the unit tests, so that they only verify the behaviour of an invidiual method or function, everything outside of the function is mocked. This is a really good idea. If we write a function ConvertCurrency and that function calls service GetCurrencyRate(date, currency), create a mock service which always returns the same value. How about unit tests for the service GetCurrencyRate? The service probably gets the currency rate for a certain date/currency combination from a database, perhaps through the stored procedure call Finance.GetCurrencyRate. And just like the unit tests for ConvertCurrency uses a mock service for GetCurrencyRate, the unit test for GetCurrencyRate will use a mock for the stored procedure Finance.GetCurrencyRate. But who will test the stored procedure Finance.GetCurrencyRate? In this session we will talk about test driven database development. How we can apply the TDD methodology to database development. We will look at the most common unit testing frameworks and how they integrate with database development environments. We will look at unit test design and how we can isolate unit tests to only test the logic of an individual statement, view, stored procedure or user defined function. | 13-09-21 11:30 | 13-09-21 12:45 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

Day 1 | Data Platform Confusion: What are viable Data Platform Options when considering Azure from On-Prem? | Charley Hanania | Architecture | Modernising and Migrating to the Cloud can be both destabilising and opportunistic, depending on how it is approached. If someone you’ve been given the “”Lift-and-Shift”” option as preferred, think about all the history and practices that are inherent on-premises that you may want to correct through this transition. In this session, Charley will go through the options for storing and using data in the Azure Cloud versus what may have been available on premises and how light through to heavy redesigns can open your platform and systems up to safer, scalable and more flexible capabilities. There are so many options that it can be difficult to determine which architecture options are right for which scenarios, so this should shed some light on capabilities and opportunities that may not have been considered. | 13-09-21 13:00 | 13-09-21 14:15 | Yukon | View In Your Timezone |
Day 1 | Getting Started with Extended Events | Kathi Kellenberger | Data Administration | Over the years, many DBAs have avoided using Extended Events and continued using Trace. Day 2 | Simplify data management with partitioning | Uwe Ricken | Development | The times of small database systems are now over. Even “small” systems already provide databases with several 100 GB data volume. It can be a real challenge for the DBA to complete the daily maintenance tasks, data backup, consistency checks, … in a reasonable time frame. With the help of partitioning (also a feature of the Standard Edition since SQL 2016), considerable advantages in ETL processes, maintenance and backup / recovery can be achieved. The main area of application for partitioning is the optimization of the load paths for complex DWH solutions and the maintenance of large databases (statistics, indexes, backups, restores). The very strongly demo-based session shows partitioning scenarios that let the DBA do alternative things again and encourage ETL developers to dance the joys. | 14-09-21 8:30 | 14-09-21 9:45 | Hydra | View In Your Timezone |

Data Modelling in Azure Cosmos DB | Will Velida | Development | Modelling your data correctly is vital when building efficient applications that use Azure Cosmos DB. | 2021-09-13 05:30:00 | 2021-09-13 06:45:00 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

Zero downtime database deployments | Alex Yates | Development | You understand that big bang deployments are painful, but each deploy may disrupt users, so you are restricted to tight deployment windows for your database. | 2021-09-13 07:00:00 | 2021-09-13 08:15:00 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

Power BI scenarios for automated monitoring | Andrea Martorana Tusa | Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics | Power BI grows at an exponential rate and so probably does your environment. | 2021-09-13 11:30:00 | 2021-09-13 12:45:00 | Sphinx | View In Your Timezone |
Test Driven Database Development | Magnus Ahlkvist | Development | est Driven Development, or TDD, means we start with unit tests, even before writing our code. | 2021-09-13 11:30:00 | 2021-09-13 12:45:00 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |
Data Platform Confusion: What are viable Data Platform Options when considering Azure from On-Prem? | 2021-09-13 13:00:00 | 2021-09-13 14:15:00 | Yukon | View In Your Timezone |

Delta Lake with Azure Databricks – Let’s build a reliable Data Lake! | Mohit Batra | Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics | While Data Lakes allow us to store massive amounts of data, there are many challenges that come along – maintaining data and multiple files, providing consistency to downstream applications, handling updates, data recovery in case of failures, slower transactional query performance, consolidation of streaming data and much more. On the other hand, Data Warehouses based on relational databases, handle many of these challenges, but they do not scale well and are expensive to maintain. Are you interested to build a large-scale, reliable Data Lake? This session will take you through Delta Lake – an open-source storage layer that brings ACID transactions and reliability to your data lakes. It can scale to handle TBs and PBs of data, handle updates, combine and store batch and streaming data, as well as data and metadata management. And this is what we will look into, via demos: 1. What is Delta Lake, and its features 2. How to get started with Delta Lake using Azure Databricks 3. How to handle Inserts, Updates, Deletes and Merge for the records 4. How it provides ACID guarantees, using transactional logs 5. How Time Travel works 6. How schema enforcement and schema evolution works 7. How data clustering, and clean up works 8. And compare it with Parquet format in terms of features and performance These features of Delta Lake can truly help you build large-scale data warehouses in your Data Lake. | 2021-09-14 08:30:00 | 2021-09-14 09:45:00 | Sphinx | View In Your Timezone |

Simplify data management with partitioning | Uwe Ricken | Development | The times of small database systems are now over. | 2021-09-14 08:30:00 | 2021-09-14 09:45:00 | Hydra | View In Your Timezone |

Monitoring SQL Server on Linux performance with Performance Co-Pilot and Grafana | Louis Imershein | Data Administration | Recent advancements in open source projects make it easier than ever to do much more than just basic performance monitoring of SQL Server on modern Linux systems. In this talk we’ll look into two tools which have recently been enhanced to support SQL Server on Linux: Performance Co-Pilot (PCP), and Grafana. PCP is a lightweight system performance analysis toolkit. Metrics are provided to PCP through Performance Metric Domain Agents (PMDAs). The PMDAs provide special-purpose modules that allow PCP to collect a wide range of specialized metrics. Recently, a PMDA for SQL Server was introduced as well as an ansible playbook to deploy and configure the PMDA across multi-server Linux environments. While PCP is used to collect metrics, Grafana is the web-based open source tool to display performance graphs and notify you of the unexpected. The new SQL Server Performance Dashboard for Grafana displays not only SQL Server data, but also important Linux system graphs that you can use to identify trouble spots. By the time youÂ’re done with this talk youÂ’ll understand: how to use PCP and Grafana to identify SQL Server on Linux performance problems and track down solutions. | 2021-09-14 13:00:00 | 2021-09-14 14:15:00 | Shiloh | View In Your Timezone |

All You Wanted to Know About Collations | Erland Sommarskog | Development | Collations is a topic that tends to confuse SQL Server professionals. | 2021-09-13 10:00:00 | 2021-09-13 12:00:00 | View In Your Timezone |

Business Analysis with T-SQL | Dejan Sarka | Development | No matter if you use SQL Server on premises, Azure SQL Database, or Azure Synapse Analytics, you might have a feeling that the main language for these services, the T-SQL language, is somehow obsolete and not capable enough for the need of the modern analytics. This session will show you the opposite. You can make advanced business analytics also with T-SQL, you do not need to use R, Python, or some other currently fashionable language for every single in-depth view in your data. In addition, you can get magnitudes better performance inside a database management system when in statistical languages and engines. You will learn how to use T-SQL for queries that you might already be familiar with, for aggregating queries. But this is only to warm you up. Then you will learn how to do hazard and survival analysis, market basket analysis with association rules using different measures like support and confidence, and even sequential market basket analysis, when there is a sequence in the basket. Then the session introduces the look-alike model, which is a mixture of k-nearest neighbor and decision trees algorithms.
