Trainer/Speaker

Markus Ehrenmueller-Jensen

Abstract

If you want to show more than simply the data provided by the data source and implement calculations in Power BI or Analysis Services Tabular you have to learn to write Data Analysis Expression (DAX). This workshop starts at entry level and jump-starts you into the world of even complex calculations within 8h. In the first module Markus will introduce the basic syntax, functions and concepts (which are best of bread, taken from Excel, SQL and MDX). Then you will learn that you can exchange complexity in the data model with complexity in DAX (and the other way around) in real world examples. Beginners usually struggle to fully understand the differences between calculated columns and measures. That’s why we will dedicate two modules on them. In the last module Markus will pick your brain with complex challenges and advanced techniques, which you can then take as template to apply on your own use cases.

Modules/Topics

1. Syntax and Basic Functions
2. Data Model and DAX - A Symbiosis
3. Calculated Columns
4. Measures
5. Advanced Techniques

Attendee Pre-requisite (if any)

Abstract

First, we will cover the basics of Kubernetes: What is it, who can use it, what can it be used for, why is this different or better than old school deployments through virtual machines. We will then build a Kubernetes cluster and learn how to deploy applications into this cluster. Building on those Kubernetes deployment fundamentals, we will then deploy a SQL Server Big Data Cluster to showcase how we can deploy a complex stateful application in Kubernetes.

We will close the day by working our way through the next gamechanger for Deployments: Azure Arc Data Services, a solution that allows us to deploy managed Azure Data Service to any hardware running Kubernetes (including any cloud vendor) on-premises or in the cloud.

You will leave with the knowledge, scripts, and tools to get started with Kubernetes and Kubernetes based applications today!

Trainer/Speaker

Hugo Kornelis

Abstract

For troubleshooting slow queries, looking at the execution plan is a good starting point. But sometimes, just looking at the plan does not help. Sometimes you need to dig deeper.

In this full-day workshop, you will learn everything you need to be take your understanding of execution plans to the next level. For most of the operators you’ll find in execution plans, we will look at the inner workings, and at properties that affect their behavior. We will also look at how the operators within a plan interact with each other. This will increase your understanding on why the optimizer picks a plan, and what you can do to make it pick a better plan.

Aside from explaining most operators, we will also look at how these operators interact, which will help you understand which areas in complex execution plans can cause performance issues.

If you have seen some execution plans but feel you need to bring your understanding to the next level, then this workshop is for you!

Abstract

This training session covers big data, data virtualization and analytics in SQL Server 2019 Big Data cluster.

SQL Server 2019 Big Data Cluster, (BDC for short), is the evolution of SQL Server, and its goals are to be able to integrate, manage and analyze data in the peta byte range.

The session starts with an overview of what the BDC is, to get everyone on the same page. After the overview, we look at data virtualization; how we can use the BDC as a data hub. We then drill down and look at how storage pools, and data pools works BDC . From there we look at how we can ingest data into the BDC, and how to analyze the data using the built-in Apache Spark engine. Part of this also looks at using Apache Kafka and Apache Spark together to ingest data into the BDC.

We also see how we can "mount" external HDFS and Azure Data Lake sources in the Big Data Cluster.

Modules/Topics

1. Overview of SQL Server 2019 Big Data Cluster

Amit R S Bansal

Abstract

One fine day you realize that you have to start tuning SQL Server for better performance. The need might have arisen from a recent performance issue, or the barrage of support tickets that are filling your inbox, or maybe your boss assigned this to you after realizing that SQL Server performance troubleshooting is not his cup of tea. Irrespective of the reason, the challenge is upon you to identify, diagnose and fix a variety of performance issue that is plaguing your SQL Server environment.

Performance troubleshooting can be categorized as proactive, real-time & reactive. If a well-defined methodology is followed during the proactive phase, you will have to fire-fight less during the real-time troubleshooting phase and you will have a lot of meaningful performance data to work within the reactive phase, which will further help you in preventing performance cases.

Join this demo-filled, full-day class, where you will learn the three approaches of SQL Server performance troubleshooting & tuning. You will learn the practical way, exactly like how you would troubleshoot in the real world with lots of code and scripts. Amongst many takeaways, here are some interesting ones:

  • Develop a performance troubleshooting methodology for the real-world
  • Learn how to benchmark and baseline (and also take away a framework, ready-to-use)
  • Analyzing and troubleshooting common wait types
  • Proactive, reactive, and real-time CPU troubleshooting
  • Troubleshooting IO performance bottlenecks
  • Tracking SQL Server memory consumption and fixing OOM errors
  • Dealing with Tempdb madness\Top 6 query tuning techniques that will solve 75% of performance issues (real-world query tuning)
  • Top 3 indexing strategies that will fix 60% indexing woes

Uwe Ricken

Abstract

Are you already an experienced programmer and know your way around the Microsoft SQL Server development language? Still, there are always problems with query runtimes that you cannot explain to yourself. Data is not written to database tables fast enough and you are looking for ways to optimize ETL processes?

These are all things that pose new challenges for a database developer daily. This workshop for database developers closes many of these gaps and uses practical examples to explain, analyze and solve the problems.

  • Parameter sniffing
  • Non SARGable queries
  • Sort spills
  • Implicit conversion
  • NOLOCK / TABLOCK
  • Temporary tables vs. Table variables
  • Recursive CTEs
  • partitioning
  • scalar functions

This workshop is suitable for database developers who are already beyond the basics and want to sharpen the nuances. Ideally, you already have experience with execution plans and are very familiar with the SQL Server Management Studio.

This workshop is most hands on with prepared labs for the participants. All demos and hands on will be handled wit a BIG database (17 GB) and not with only a few records.
