Benjamin Kettner & Uwe RickenEnglishWorking with time: Timeseries data in SQL ServerTime series data is omnipresent in today’s data landscapes. Technical logging, financial transactions or IoT devices all generate data that is typically associated with a timestamp and can be categorized as time series data.

Even tough time series data stem from a plethora of sources, the structure of the data and the queries that are typically executed against this type of data are very similar throughout the different applications. Thus, it makes sense that a whole ecosystem of different databases evolved for working with time series data. The benefits of such specialized databases is that they are equipped with structures for supporting the different types of queries while at the same time providing techniques for the ingress of time series data as a stream of data.

One of the most popular specialized tools for working with time series data is the TimeScale extension for PostgreSQL databases. Installing and enabling this extension will result in the creation of indexes, triggers and procedures that facilitate working with time series data.

In our session, we will take a closer look at time series data and explain the different operations and data structures that can be utilized when working with time series data. We will discuss a strategy for benchmarking the efficiency of working with time series data. Next, we will take a closer look at the TimeScale extension for PostgreSQL and analyze its components. Finally, we will show which of these components can be implemented in an Azure SQL database and which need to be adjusted.

Denis ReznikEnglishSQL Server Query LifecycleWe all know what a relational database is, what the SQL language is, and how to get or modify data in a database. The algorithm is straightforward:

1) Write an SQL query

2) Send it to SQL Server

3) Get the result

It’s all straightforward, but only until the moment when we get the result is not what we expected, or do not get it at all, or gave up to wait for the data, etc. It happens because, between the second and third steps, many things affect the result. When we face the issue related to query execution, it can be challenging to solve the problem without knowing what is happening inside. And in this session, we will go with you the same way that the query in SQL Server goes from the moment you run it in SSMS to the moment of receiving the result. Following this will help us understand why we get such a result under certain conditions and work more efficiently with databases.

With increased amounts of data and usage, inherently data security concerns grow. Cloud platform like Azure, Amazon, or Google promising organization data is almost impossible to hack. And if the data is leaked it will be encrypted so no one from outside the organization should be able to READ the data, claimed by these big vendors. However, there are security issues that can arise from rogue employees around PII data and there needs to be a process in place to deal with this. In this session, we will highlight how a modern data warehouse can act as a safeguard against malicious data exposure or misusage. As well as showcase different ways to protect PII data in both production and non-production environment and explore Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics capabilities to protect sensitive data.Business Intelligence & Advanced AnalyticsIntermediate

On the user side, private “more positive” legislation has not appeared for a long time. However, from the point of view of those who process the data, the situation is not so great. To do this properly, each organization needs to identify and document the locations where personal data is stored in existing databases and apply the GDPR. In cases where the system is in the early stages of development, identifying business processes that are subject to GDPR rules can help. However, when we talk about existing environments, it can be a great challenge from the practical and formally right side.

Azure SQL Database offers built-in mechanisms and tools that can help you ensure that all your data is GDPR compliant. Your only job is to use them in the right way.

Mathias ThierbachEnglishThe internals of a PBIX file and how pbi-tools helps make sense of it allThe PBIX file is the fundamental building block when it comes to Power BI development. You may have heard that PBIX files are simply ZIP files with an internal file structure, however, very little is publicly known beyond that.

Mathias, for his work on pbi-tools, has spent years deciphering the (undocumented) PBIX internals. Those efforts have led to pbi-tools, today the only end-to-end source control solution for Power BI development.

This session will explain what’s inside a PBIX file and how everything is linked together. Using the folder structure view of a PBIX file provided by pbi-tools, all of the components (Model, Report, Queries, Resources, Settings) will be looked at in detail. You will understand how to track changes made to a PBIX file using Power BI Desktop, what those changes mean, and how to apply similar changes offline, targeting the pbi-tools folder structure only.

Using that understanding, the session will further look into more advanced automation scenarios which become viable once the PBIX internals are known and provide various examples. This session is likely to inspire you to take your Power BI projects to new levels of automation!

Taiob AliEnglishWhat the heck is a checkpoint, and why should I care?An 8K page is the fundamental unit of data storage in SQL Server. For performance reasons, SQL Server performs every data modification operation in memory (buffer pool) and does not write it back to disk immediately.

This is where checkpoint comes into play. The Database Engine periodically issues a checkpoint on each database. A checkpoint writes the current in-memory modified pages (known as dirty pages) and transaction log information from memory to disk. It also records this information in the transaction log.

This session will explain why you should care and know about the checkpoint process and the different checkpoints that SQL Server does. I will show you exactly what happens during a checkpoint, how you can influence the interval of checkpoints, changes made with checkpoint settings in SQL 2012 and SQL 2016+.

tempdb is used by every database workload for temporary storage, and additionally for internal operations.

So, it’s important to get SQL Server’s tempdb as optimal as possible.

The behavior of tempdb has also changed over time, but what hasn’t changed is the criticality of tempdb and how its proper use and configuration can have major implications in the performance of your application.

In this session we will discuss some of the improvements with tempdb in the latest versions of SQL Server and what good tempdb practices look like today.

We will also discuss the improvements in SQL Server that will unlock scalability of tempdb-heavy workloads now and into the future.

SQL Server has improved tempdb in every single release and SQL Server 2022 is no exception.

SQL Server

A user needs read access to an Azure Storage account that has been registered in Microsoft Purview. You can grant this access directly in Microsoft Purview by creating a data access policy through the Policy management app in the Microsoft Purview governance portal.

Data access policies can be enforced through Purview on data systems that have been registered for policy.

Workflows are automated, repeatable business processes that users can create within Microsoft Purview to validate and orchestrate CUD (create, update, delete) operations on their data entities. Enabling these processes allow organizations to track changes, enforce policy compliance, and ensure quality data across their data landscape.

Azure Stream Analytics (ASA) is the service for you. But let’s dig a bit deeper and understand what makes a streaming query in ASA different from a T-SQL one in SQL Server.

In this session we’ll start by a short introduction to stream processing and its typical applications like Streaming ETL or real-time dashboarding, Then we’ll focus on the 3 key aspects that we need to keep in mind when working on our streaming SQL queries in ASA.

First we’ll talk data types. We’ll see how to best handle the complex ones (JSON nested records and array), but also that ASA applies types at the row level (which is both awesome and treacherous) and how to deal with it.

Then we’ll discuss the temporal aspect of stream processing, in theory and how it’s implemented in ASA. That means time skew policies, windowing functions and how timestamps evolve as data flows through query steps.

Finally we’ll have a performance conversation. We’ll see how partitioning a stream differs (or not) from partitioning a table. We’ll take a look at the metrics to monitor and how/when to scale an ASA job.

Sagar SumitEnglishIntelligent Lakehouse: Think Beyond Transactional Data Lake with Apache HudiAbstract

The rise of cloud computing, decoupling of storage and compute, and the need to store and process large amounts of unstructured or semi-structured data led to the data lake movement a decade ago. And yet the promise of that movement has been unfulfilled. The lack of transaction and its isolation in the data lake forced users to maintain both a lake and data warehouse in their data architecture. As if that was not enough, the problem of data quality and governance has grown with the data lake movement. To bridge some of these gaps, Apache Hudi, created in 2016 at Uber, pioneered the modern transactional data lake, aka lakehouse, architecture movement. In this session, we will discuss the design of an embedded database kernel that is Hudi, and how it unlocks transactional updates/deletes with tunable concurrency control and incremental change streams from tables directly on lake storage. Then, we will go one step beyond and discuss what it takes to build a lake that is not only transactional but also intelligent. With its rich set of table services and indexing schemes to offer the advantage of data locality, Hudi attempts to balance the tradeoff between incremental ingestion and query latency in a novel way. Today, Hudi already powers data lakes of varying scales from a few terabytes to exabytes.

a) Dynamic Data Masking – examples of masking sensitive columns of tables using a SQL script. Include nuances of using the Custom String mask to handle specific email domains (like .gov, .edu etc) or SSN etc.

b) Utilizing Row-level-Security to hide specific sensitive data in a table from users who are not authorized to see those rows, while all of the the users can see all non-sensitive rows.

c) We will go one more step in depth about scenario b), where the table itself’s schema cannot be changed due to software constraints, and examine how row level security can still be applied.

SQL Server
